Many wastewater facilities are looking at ways to reduce their costs or generate revenues to meet their costs. Waste to Energy is becoming a field of interest for plant superintendents. They are looking for a steady and stable source of biogas to convert to energy so they use the energy in the plant to achieve net zero, that is reducing their need to but electricity down to zero. In some cases they are interested in achieving a positive balance where they have excess gas that can be converted to power and put back in the grid. Some are contemplating using the gas to power vehicles in a push to becoming Eco-friendly in the community.

Membrane Gasholder

The membrane gasholder consists of two membranes, the gas membrane and the air membrane. The air membrane is continuously being washed, that is air is continuously being purged out of the air membrane which allows for minimal gas accumulation in the air membrane. The gas membrane holds the large volumes of gas that allow for steady stable operations of a waste to energy system. Compared to steel covers, membrane gas holders are simply the best solution.

Ovivo is the only supplier of membrane gas holders that has manufacturing facilities in the US. The membranes are cut, welded and tested in Little Rock, AR. This allows for quick turn around in any situation. The materials of a membrane gas holder are also sourced from the most reliable sources in Europe. It is critical for the durability of the membrane that the material used for these membranes is sourced properly and with the proper design parameters. Knowledge of the different types of membranes used for gas storage is critical for the procurement of the solution which will provide the customer with a long lasting product.

A membrane gas holder will typically take less than one week to install and put into operation. The membrane arrives on site and is spreads out and attached to the anchors within a few days. then the membranes are filled up inside of a day and the membrane is ready to operate. Instrumentation provided by Ovivo is simple and easy to integrate into an existing plant control system.

Once in operation the gas holder can provide feedback on the stored volume which allows the operator to plan all of the operations around the management of his solids handling section of the wastewater treatment plant.

What happens if someone shoots at the membrane? Will it explode?

No it will not explode. The outer membrane is the air membrane. Any projectile that penetrates the outer membrane will allow air to escape from the membrane. A small hole will not compromise the integrity of the air membrane. If the customer wants, the hole can be patched with a repair kit.

Do you have many installations?

As of 2014 we have over ten installations in the US. Our partner, Ecomembrane is the second largest supplier of membrane gas holders in the world with over 400 installations. In addition, we can manufacture the membranes in almost any shape to suit our customers’ needs.

What happens if gas accumulates inside the air membrane? Will this be a problem?

In our design, the air is continuously being purged out so no gas accumulates in the air membrane.

Do you need a net for the gas membrane when the membrane gas holder is mounted on a digester tank?

In most cases, a net is unnecessary. The only time that a net would be required would be if there is sharp equipment in the tank that might cause a tear. Otherwise, the membrane can easily sit on the sludge in the digester. Each digester is unique and a detailed discussion of the particulars for your project should be discussed.
